Most have heard of the curative or at least restorative powers of thermal baths and water spas – but how about an inch loss treatment that “combines the use of a unique sea clay formula" to maximize results? They were developed by an American doctor named Richard Strem after much research into the benefits attained or harnessed from minerals used in spa treatments.
He created what is today called the “Universal Contour Wrap”; the idea behind the procedure is to draw out or flush your body’s toxins out- the very same stuff that traps cellulite and the like. Clients are guaranteed a six-inch loss within the first session – measured from all over the body.

The wrap is available in spas the world over, and in Toronto, you’ll find the affable staff at GQ Spa in the city’s west end Liberty Village neighbourhood trained in the art of the contour wrap. To garner the full effects of this treatment, it’s recommended to leave modesty parked at the door.
The first thing you’ll be asked to do is to strip down to a pair of disposable spa panties (more like mini-thongs – you get the picture) sans bra. You stand with your legs shoulder-width apart while the contour expert measures you literally from head to toe. Yes, even your jaw is measured, along with breasts, tummy, hips, thighs, arms and ankles.
It's a Numbers Game
After the necessarily lengthy time-consuming measurements, the wrapping begins. Warm tensor bands that have steeped in the clay solution are carefully and tightly wrapped around every part of your body (with the exception of your head and face).
In no time at all, you look like a modern day Egyptian mummy- especially once you don the silver “space suit”, as it was affectionately dubbed by GQ Spa owner Irene. The silver blousy top and track pant-like bottoms are meant to keep you warm while you relax to the soothing sounds of music, or bring a book along and read while the bands and clay do their thing.
Before we continue, it should be pointed out that no, this is not a dehydration system. One is recommended to drink water before the treatment (although not too much as going to the bathroom once wrapped is nearly impossible), and post-treatment to continue flushing out toxins.
What you are letting go of is toxins, and the clay is said to tighten and tone the body while cleansing the skin. The effects last up to 30 days if no extra weight is gained during that period.

The wrap is a favourite celeb slimming treatment of stars such as Joey Fatone, Anna Lynn McCord, Jean Smart and Kevin Sorbo. This willing subject lost a total of 8 inches and change and wasn’t even thirsty afterwards!
The back side felt a little firmer too! A series of treatments is recommended for maximum effect (one can only wish!) which can amount to about 25 inches lost all over the body. And just in time for Spring! Bikinis anyone?
